2019 Fall Letter to Schools on E-cigarettes
Use of electronic cigarettes continues to be a serious health issue in Colorado and the nation. The U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams declared youth e-cigarette use an epidemic and he encourages parents, teachers and lawmakers to take action to address this epidemic. As such, STEPP and the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) collaborated on an updated letter that will be sent to schools/school districts. This letter will provide updated health information and resources to address nicotine vaping, e-cigarette and other tobacco use among Colorado youth. We’ve also included guidelines on progressive discipline that we hope will assist school administrators to better manage violations of Tobacco-Free Schools policy. CDE will distribute the letter via the CDE email listserv to schools and community partners next week. STEPP asks that you familiarize yourself with the letter contents, to be better able to assist schools in your community with additional questions and concerns.
