Articles: Trends in Cigarette Marketing Expenditures, 1975-2019: An Analysis of Federal Trade Commission Cigarette Reports

This article tracks cigarette marketing expenditures over the past 45 years. Notably, cigarette manufacturers have steadily increased spending at the point of sale on price promotions to encourage continued consumption. Because of the scope of the article, e-cigarettes are not included in the analysis, but similar spending and tactics are being used in that product sector as well. As state and local tobacco taxes continue to increase, tobacco companies are putting monetary resources into price promotion to undermine these highly effective public health strategies.
