Cytisinicline for Smoking Cessation: A Randomized Clinical Trial (2023)
Cytisinicline has undergone a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, setting the stage for potential FDA approval. Cytisine, as it is also known, has been an OTC cessation medication in Central and Eastern Europe for decades. It would be the first cessation medication approved by the FDA since varenicline was approved fifteen years ago. About a third of study participants receiving cytisinicline were nicotine abstinent after 12 weeks, and 21% were nicotine abstinent after 60 days. This puts cytisinicline in roughly the same category as varenicline for efficacy. So, this is not a watershed moment for tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy. Still, this is a potentially very real solution for thousands of current nicotine-dependent individuals and a welcome relief for those who previously used varenicline but could not bear the side effects. use the link below to read the full article.
