New MMWR Details Medicaid Coverage for Tobacco Cessation
The higher prevalence of tobacco use among the Medicaid-enrolled population is a persistent and important health disparity. This recent report from the CDC and the American Lung Association determined that Medicaid cessation benefits can improve the health of enrollees who smoke. Unfortunately, less than half of states offer comprehensive benefits, and only three states offer those benefits without barriers. Colorado has eliminated most barriers to care but continues to limit the duration of benefits and the number of quit attempts that are supported each year.
