Nicotine Trend Spreading on TikTok Packs a Potentially Dangerous Punch

In this article, a pharmacist at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus discusses nicotine pouches and associated health risks due to their recent gain in popularity. Nicotine pouches are small pouches filled with nicotine and flavors that are placed between the upper lip and the gum and dissolve after some time. Since they are not currently considered smokeless tobacco products, the FDA does not closely monitor them, and they can contain higher concentrations of nicotine than other products on the market. This makes the product more addictive and can contribute to many health risks linked with nicotine usage, such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, which contribute to the development of chronic conditions after long periods of use. These products have been heavily marketed to young people, including by social media influencers on platforms such as TikTok. Sales of these products have increased significantly, with a 65% increase in sales between 2022 and 2023. Given the health risks and intentional predatory marketing to young people, it is important to stay up to date on information about nicotine pouch products.
