Results from the Annual National Youth Tobacco Survey

Findings from the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) released in September found that current e-cigarette usage among U.S. middle and high school students declined from 7.7% to 5.9% during 2023-2024, which is the lowest level in a decade. E-cigarette use declined the most among high school students, but there were no significant changes in use among middle school students. E-cigarettes remain the most used tobacco product among middle and high school students. Flavored disposable vapes were reported as the most used product among e-cigarette users (87.6%), with Elf Bar being the most popular brand used. Youth nicotine pouch use did not significantly change from 2023 to 2024 (1.5% to 1.8%, respectively). Zyn brand flavored nicotine pouches were reported as the most common products used. Although public health officials are encouraged that youth tobacco product use remains relatively low, they express that tobacco control strategies, regulations, and enforcement efforts remain critical, especially within the changing tobacco product landscape and increased use of oral nicotine pouches among youth.
