State-level patterns and trends in cigarette smoking across racial and ethnic groups in the United States

A recent analysis finds evidence that between 2011-2018, smoking prevalence disparities between White smokers and other groups have narrowed. However, the authors also show that the smoking prevalence declines are happening at different rates between groups and across states. This suggests that narrowing disparities are in part due to state and local efforts. The authors didn’t analyze local efforts, so further research is needed to determine where such declines were most dramatic and what commonalities in approaches exist to effect them.
