Tobacco Product Use Among Adults – United States, 2021

Over the past 50 years, there has been a decrease in the number of people in the United States who smoke commercial cigarettes. However, the use of tobacco products is still the leading cause of preventable diseases and deaths in the country, and certain groups of people are more affected than others. To gather information about tobacco use among adults, researchers looked at data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey. The survey found that 18.7% of adults in the United States, or 46 million people, reported using any tobacco product in 2021. This includes cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, and pipes (like hookah). Most people who used tobacco products used combustible ones (like cigarettes, cigars, or pipes), and some used more than one type of tobacco product. Certain groups of people were more likely to use tobacco products than others, such as men, people under 65, people in rural areas, and those with low incomes.
